Hello and Happy Sunday 🙂
Here I will continue my story about the summer trip.
……………
Next stop: Veliko Turnovo.
Another city with rich history and memories. History because this was the old capital of Bulgaria during the Second Bulgarian Empire. The city has old and new part. In the old part ,you can visit the old town, with small tiny streets and the feeling of going back in time. The entire city feels like it had not changed since I studied there 🙂 Yep, this was where I spend my student years and so to the many memories.
It is a relatively small town in the north central of Bulgaria surrounded by other small towns and villages filled with history. The area is quite interesting to visit with its history and architecture, and I will highly recommended for anyone visiting Bulgaria.
Photos from the old town:

From the old town you can reach Tsarevets which is a medieval stronghold located on one of the surrounding hills. It is 206 meters above sea level and it had served as the Second Bulgarian Empire’s primary fortress and strongest bulwark, housing the royal and the patriarchal palaces.

The new part of the city is a bit different than the rest of the Bulgarian cities as you wouldn’t see higher buildings maybe 5 or 7 stores high. Even this feels high.
I Will not write too much about the town, as I will post another article telling a little bit more about the city and the part it played in Bulgarian history.

The next stop is Burgas.
Burgas is a city on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. By the way, Bulgaria is located on the western part of the Black Sea coast which is our east border. There are a lot of resorts and usually in the past was full of tourists.
Burgas is the second largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and the fourth-largest in Bulgaria. The city is surrounded by the Burgas Lakes and located at the westernmost point of the Black Sea, at the large Burgas Bay. The Port of Burgas is the largest port in Bulgaria, and Burgas Airport is the second most important in the country. (Wikipedia ref text)

Something interesting I noticed in the city are the small neighborhood stores and food markets. These stores were typical before but not in the last few years as big supermarket chains are overtaking the citys. It is nice to see some administrative support for small businesses.
Photos from Central Park:

Most of the time in each town or city you will find some kind of central fountain and green space:

Below the photos are from the city center.

And of course a few food photos 🙂 It is very typical to eat “пържена цаца” fried sprats during summer. Somehow it was quite difficult to find a place to eat this dish, as it turns out most of the nicest places dont serve it as is too cheep hehe. Anyway we ended up finding a small place type of fish fast food, can believe there was one 🙂

I stayed with my mum for a few days there and after went back to Shumen for one more day with my brothers family, after which I headed to the capital, where I took my flight back to Dublin.
I didn’t visit Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, I am not a fan of it, but there are few interesting places to visit and especially the surrounding of the city.
Some final photos of the trip
Well, it was a busy, lovely, family time. This was my summer holiday this year.
Back in Dublin 🙂
